Melonie Powell, RN, will speak at the Motivational
Healing and Resource Fair on Sept. 30.

Organized by the MHCC Nursing program, this free event takes place Saturday, Sept. 30, from 1 to 4 p.m. in the MHCC College Theatre. More than 20 community health groups, businesses, and MHCC programs and departments will exhibit at the fair. Light refreshments and snacks will be provided.

The Motivational Healing and Resource Fair will highlight themes of strength and resilience as well as provide information on receiving help and finding support. Keynote speaker and MHCC Nursing program graduate Melonie Powell, RN, will discuss her own life journey and why she now lives according to the motto ‘You Must Never Give Up!’

“By the age of 18, I was a mother of four, and struggling to survive a highly abusive relationship,” Powell describes. “I found myself addicted to drugs and traveling on a path of destruction. My children were taken away by Child Protective Services, and I spent many years lost, scared, and full of shame and guilt.”

However, after a period of incarceration, Powell changed her life and journeyed down a new path. She found healing, worked hard, earned a degree from MHCC, and began her career at Legacy Emanuel Hospital. Today, she teaches at Legacy Health and MHCC.

“It is possible to rise up from despair, achieve your dreams, and accomplish a fulfilling life,” says Powell. “At the fair, community members can learn about the support and resources available to them and share their stories with others who have also struggled with life’s many challenges.”
