Children's Swimming Lessons

Mt. Hood Community College Aquatic Center uses the American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim progression.  All instructors are American Red Cross Water Safety instructors and lifeguards.

Fees (per 8-lesson session/per child):

Parent/Child and Preschool Lessons: $38.00
School Age Learn to Swim: $42.00

Refunds and Credits

Refunds or transfers will be given only to requests made three or more business days prior to the first class period.  You must present your receipt to be eligible for a refund.  After the lesson session has started only 50 percent credit toward your next lesson purchase will be granted.

Waiting Lists

To provide better service, waiting lists are available for all children’s programs that have reached capacity.  This list is used primarily as a courtesy for cancellations in existing classes.  Adding classes in addition to those scheduled depends both on pool availability and on instructor availability.
Please note that classes may be combined or cancelled if there are fewer than three children enrolled.

Please note that safety skills are an integral part of the Learn-to-Swim program and appropriate skills will be incorporated into each class.

Class and Level Descriptions

Infant/Toddler/Child and Parent Lessons (Learner Pool)

 Parent/Merbabe - 8-18 months and Parent/Toddler - 19-36 months
These are water adjustment classes for children who are accompanied in the water by an adult.  This class enables children to enjoy the water with someone they trust by playing games, singing songs and having fun!  Children who are not toilet trained must wear plastic pants or swim diapers.

8-18 mo Parent/Merbabe T/Th 11:15-11:45 a.m. $38

 Parent/Child - 2 ½ to 5 years
This is a water adjustment class for preschoolers who need more one-on-one time before joining group lessons or who have not yet reached age 3 years.  Parent participation in the water with child is required. Preschool Level 1 and 2 skills are taught.

2 ½-5 years Parent/Child M/W 5:30-6:00 p.m. $38

 Preschool Lessons (Learner and 25-yard Pools)

The child must be at least 3 years old to start preschool lessons and will continue in preschool programs until they have begun first grade.  Instructor to student ratio is 1:6. 

Level 1 (Learner Pool)
Orients children to the aquatic environment and helps them gain basic aquatic skills. Skills are performed with assistance.

Helps children gain greater independence in their skills and develop more comfort in and around water. Treading water is introduced.  Skills are performed with assistance as needed.

Helps children start to gain basic swimming propulsive skills on the front and back. Emphasis is on performing skills independently.

Advanced Preschool (25-yard pool)
Increase endurance of basic swimming propulsive skills on the front and back as well as treading water.  Front crawl, combined backstroke and elementary backstroke kick are introduced, as well as basic dives and dolphin kick.

Learn-to-Swim (25-yard pool) 

The child must be in first grade or older.  Instructor to student ratio varies from 1:8 to 1:10 as a maximum.

Level 1 – Introduction to Water Skills
This is an initial introduction to the water environment.

Level 2 – Fundamental Aquatic Skills
This is a basic class in which swimmers will gain confidence in moving independently while on the front and back.  Skills introduced at this level include rolling over and treading water.

Level 2.5 – Stroke Readiness
Level 2.5 will introduce rotary breathing, dolphin kick, elementary backstroke and breaststroke kicks as well as treading water.  The focus of this level is the beginning of stroke refinement for front crawl and comfort in deeper water.

 Level 3 – Stroke Development
This level builds on the skills introduced in Level 2.5, with guided practice in deeper water.  Skills introduced at this level include dolphin and scissor kicks as well as basic diving.  The focus will be increased proficiency and endurance of front crawl, elementary backstroke and treading water.

Level 3.5 – Stroke Practice
This level introduces back crawl, breaststroke, underwater swimming, feet first surface dives and standing dives.  The focus will be increased proficiency and endurance of front crawl, butterfly, sidestroke and elementary backstroke.

Level 4 – Stroke Improvement
Level 4 introduces breaststroke, rotary kick, sculling and survival float.  The focus will be increased proficiency and endurance of front crawl, back crawl, butterfly, elementary backstroke, breaststroke and treading water.

Level 5 – Stroke Refinement
Level 5 introduces flip turns, sidestroke, survival swimming, long shallow dives and tuck and pike surface dives.  The focus will be continued proficiency, stroke refinement and endurance of front crawl, back crawl, butterfly, breaststroke, elementary backstroke and sidestroke.

6-12 years School Age 5 M/T/W/Th 8:20-9:00 a.m. $42

Level 6 – Swimming and Skill Proficiency
At this level swimmers have the choice of the following tracts:  Personal Water Safety or Fitness Swimmer. 
In addition to the specialized tracts listed above, the intent of this level is to refine strokes so swimmers swim them with ease.  The following competitive strokes will be worked on to increase efficiency:  freestyle (crawl stroke), back crawl, breaststroke and butterfly. Personal Water Safety: This tract includes the use of lifejacket skills, swimming and self-rescue techniques, and basic safety rules for boating and open water. Fitness Swimmer: Swimmers will learn to use a pace clock, pull buoys, fins and hand paddles, and also learn training principles.

Private Swim Lessons

Mt. Hood Aquatic Center offers private swim lessons.  This program is intended to provide a service to individuals who may have needs beyond the scope of group swim lessons.  These services may include working in a one-on-one environment, or on a on a special set of skills, or accommodating special needs that limit the student’s ability to participate in a group.  Lessons are offered in 30-minute sessions.  Prices range from $22.50 to $35.00 per lesson per person.  Please inquire at the Front Desk for registration.

Pre-Teen/Teen Programs

Junior Lifeguard Program
This course is designed to guide youth to the American Red Cross lifeguarding program by building a foundation of knowledge, attitudes, and skills for future lifeguards. The foundations covered include: prevention, fitness, response, leadership, and professionalism. Participants who successfully complete the course will receive the American Red Cross certificate, and may be invited be given the opportunity to assist the aquatic center as volunteer assistants during designated open recreational swim.

Fee: $80.00 per session         

Weekday Afternoons, Monday-Friday, one week

Session 1 June 15 – 19  1-5 p.m.
Session 2 June 29 –July 2 Noon-5 p.m.

Water Safety Aide
This course is designed for youth ages 11 to 14 and must have Level 4 swimming skills. Participants will obtain the experience necessary to become a water safety instructor aide. Course includes class time, water time assisting with swimming lessons.  Participates will review the WSI Handbook, along with a review of their swimming skills. Come prepared to swim. This course will prepare you to become a Water Safety Instructor and allow you to gain teaching experience.

Fee: $100.00

Teen Swimming Lessons

These classes offer individualized instruction in swimming skills, from learning the basics to improving strokes.  Learn to enjoy and be comfortable in the water.  Teen swimming lessons are offered in two 4-week sessions.
Fee: (per 8-lesson session/per person, all ages): $46

Teenage Class – Stroke Improvement
This class is open to individuals ages 12 and up.  Skills taught in this class include the basics plus learning and improving strokes.  Students will also learn how to dive.
