What Is The College Placement Test?
The College Placement Test (CPT) measures your skills in three areas: Reading, Writing, and Mathematics. It is designed to ensure your success by helping us to place you at the appropriate course levels. The test is given free to incoming students.
Testing is done on a drop-in basis, as first-come, first-served. Refer to the College Placement Testing web page for a current schedule. Space is limited, so you may be asked to wait before you can be admitted into the testing room. Your patience is appreciated.
What to Expect
You will take a computerized test for placement into Reading, Writing and Mathematics. You will use a computer to complete the CPT; however, you need no prior knowledge of computers to take this test. There is no time limit to the test. No calculators are allowed. You will be provided with lots of scratch paper and pencils.
How to Receive Your Scores
You will receive a copy of your CPT scores immediately following your test. If you have any questions about your scores, you may come to the Career Planning and Counseling Center on a walk-in basis. You do not need an appointment. Please refer to website for current office hours. You may also take the scores to your program advisor for assistance. The program advisor may also help you in deciding how these tests affect the courses for your first term at MHCC.
How to Maintain Confidentiality
Because of the confidential nature of your scores, they will not be mailed or given to you by phone.
How to Get Accommodation for Disability
If you have a documented disability and may require special testing accommodation, please contact the Disability Services Office at 503.491.6923 (v/tt).
What to Bring With You
- Photo identification. You will not be allowed to test without a valid photo ID.
- Social Security number. If you do not have a social security number or choose not to provide us with it, a random identification number can be assigned to you.
Where to Go
The test is administered in Room 2335, which is on the Campus Upper level on the north side of the library. It is close to the gated parking area near the front entrance. You may park free in any of the parking areas at MHCC.
How Long it Takes
Remember, the test is not timed. On the average, the test takes approximately 1 to 2 hours (but you may take longer if you choose). Plan your visit to the Testing Center with care, as you must complete the test all at one time. Open and closed hours for the Testing Center are posted on campus and are available on the web page. Be sure to allow yourself enough time so that you finish by the closing time for that day.
