MHCC Student Employment

The MHCC Student Employment Office promotes student success. We offer valuable, paid work experience that helps students reach their career goals.

Our services:

  • Build employment skills
  • Enhance academic learning
  • Benefit our community
  • Provide financial support to reduce student burden

To achieve this mission, we offer part-time jobs to eligible students. There are two types of student employment positions at MHCC—federal work-study (FWS) jobs and student aid. Have questions? Send us an email. Please include your MHCC student ID number in your message.

Federal Work-study Positions

Work-study employees are paid from their work-study award, which is a need-based award granted to eligible students as part of their overall financial aid package. Not all students receive work-study awards, and eligibility is decided largely by information on your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA®). You must apply for financial aid by submitting the FAFSA to decide if you are eligible for work-study.

Federal Work-study FAQs

Working as a student on campus has many advantages. You can gain valuable experience related to your major, and since you do not have to travel to a distant job site, you save time and money on travel expenses. On-campus jobs also offer flexible work schedules with supervisors who understand how student schedules change each term.

Is FWS taxable?

Yes, but you may claim "exempt" on your W2 if you qualify.

You should complete your FAFSA® as soon as possible. Your eligibility for financial aid is decided through need analysis, a process performed by the Department of Education and the MHCC Office of Financial Aid (OFA). Once you are notified of your financial aid award, you are invited to email student employment to confirm your FWS eligibility. Please follow through to be awarded FWS for the academic year.

No. You don’t have to earn all of your award, but that is the largest amount that you may earn. If you do not earn all of your award, it will not be added to your next term’s award amount.

FWS students must maintain satisfactory academic progress throughout the year to stay earning FWS. Your FWS employment may be canceled if you fail to complete the number of credits you have agreed to complete. In addition, to earn your FWS award each academic year, you must apply for financial aid each year. Each financial aid application covers summer through spring terms.

First email student employment. We can see if you have been awarded FWS and/or how much your award is for each term. If you haven’t been awarded, but are eligible for FWS, they are able to add you to the wait list. The OFA will contact you once awarded.

If you are not eligible for FWS, but would still like to have a position on-campus, you may be able to work as a student aide. Student aides are funded through each individual department, which can vary each term. Student aides must also be enrolled in at least six credits and meet other eligibility requirements. MHCC Student Aides

Student aides must be enrolled in at least six credits, though they can enroll in less than six credits for one term only. Student aides can do the same types of jobs as work-study employees, but they are paid out of departmental funds, instead of financial aid. Due to this funding aspect, there are fewer jobs than for work-study, but there are still many departments that hire student aides. Student employment can assist you with searching for student aide jobs.

We are excited to announce that student employment is moving to our brand new jobs platform, Handshake. When you enroll in classes, you should receive an email invite to join. Otherwise, you can sign up on the MHCC Handshake page.

Download the Handshake App to easily search for jobs. Search for “Handshake” on the App Store of Google Play.
