College Now: Dual Credit Program

College Now Facts

With Mt. Hood Community College's LDT (Lower Division Transfer) and CTE (Career & Technical Education) programs, high school students can get a head start by earning college credit prior to graduation. Registering for college credit while in high school is a unique opportunity that gradually introduces students to the college lifestyle and associated responsibilities.

What is College Now?

  • College Now provides high school students with the opportunity to complete both a high school course and a college course simultaneously, in the same class, and receive credit from both schools.
  • Courses are taught at the student's high school by MHCC approved high school instructors.
  • College Now courses are available to area high school seniors and qualified juniors.

Types of College Now Courses

  • Lower Division Transfer (LDT) - courses that provide credit towards a bachelor's degree in areas such as history, literature, math or science.
  • Career Technical Education (CTE) - courses within programs of study that provide credit towards one of the associate of applied science programs such as early childhood education, computer applications or automotive service technology.
  • MHCC courses numbered 100-299 are acceptable towards a MHCC degree or certificate.
  • College Now courses may or may not be eligible for transfer to four-year institutions depending on the school, however it has been a rare occasion when the credit was not accepted.
  • Students should be aware that MHCC College Now course may be accepted as elective credit only or not at all if the credits do not fit the student's major discipline or major.
  • Transfer acceptability is at the discretion of the receiving institution.

Eligibility

  • High school seniors and qualified juniors; minimum age 16
  • Enrolled in a qualified high school instructors course

Registration

  • For each course that a student enrolls in a MHCC College Now registration form must be completed.
  • No late registrations will be accepted past the registration due date provided in the term calendar.
  • High school students cannot come back in later terms to get credit for those classes for which they chose not to register, forgot to register, or did not resolve outstanding problems.

After Registration

  • After high school students register for a College Now course they will receive a MHCC ID number and can get a photo ID card, free of charge. These can be obtained at the campus library and students can receive discounted prices to on-campus sporting events, musical events or plays, and free access to the pool.
  • High teachers will receive a class list soon after the enrollment deadline. Please make sure your name is on the list for each class you registered for each term. If any corrections need to be made notify your teacher immediately.

Cost

  • All students pay a one-time fee of $35 - this fee covers all College Now courses taken through MHCC while the student is in high school.
  • There will be no financial waivers for the College Now fee.
  • Do not submit payment with the College Now enrollment form; students will be billed by MHCC.
  • Questions about payment and billing? Call Mejdi Mahjoub 503-491-6981 or Tifini Roberts 503-491-6980.
  • If a MHCC invoice is not paid within 90 days the account will be turned over to collections - this is in the student's name NOT the parents name and can result in a bad credit report.
  • Invoices must be paid before students can enroll in subsequent courses.

Solomon Amendment Disclosure

  • This amendment requires by law that the college release upon request from recruiters of the branches of the US military the following student information:
    • Name
    • Address
    • Telephone number
    • Date of birth
    • Education level
    • Academic major
    • Degrees received
  • If you requested that this information not be released through your high school, you must additionally fill out a Request to Prevent Disclosure of Directory Information form available at the MHCC Admissions, Registration and Records Office when registering in the College Now dual credit program. When the form is submitted, MHCC will not release your information to military recruiters or other parties except as specified in the notification or upon written permission from the student.

Grades/Dropping a College Now Course

  • Students must earn a grade of a "C" or better to receive College Now credit for a LDT course.
  • Students must earn a grade of a "B" or better to receive College Now credit for a CTE course.
  • Grades earned in a College Now course become part of permanent college transcripts.
  • Students not want a grade to appear on their transcript must drop the class through MHCC by the Friday of the 7th week of the college term.
  • High school instructors cannot drop a course for their students.
  • Contact MHCC Admissions, Registration & Records Office at 503-491-7347 or 503-491-6980 to authorize a drop.
  • Classes dropped at the high school are not automatically dropped at MHCC. Students must drop the course at MHCC. If the student does not drop the course an "F" grade will appear on their college transcript.
  • If a student moves away and does not complete a class at their high school the student is not automatically dropped at MHCC. The student must drop the course at MHCC. If the student does not drop the course an "F" grade will appear on their college transcript.

Sequential Courses

  • Examples of sequential course are English Composition, Foreign Languages, Math, and Science. (Example: WR121 in Winter and WR122 in Spring - you cannot enroll in WR122 before taking WR121).
  • Students must earn a "C" grade or better to enroll in subsequent courses (example: earning a "C" in WR121 allows you to enroll in WR122 or earning a "D" in WR122 means you cannot enroll in WR123)
  • Foreign Language courses and Sign Languages courses: One year of a high school foreign language course equals one term at MHCC. If a student takes a foreign language class at their high school with an approved instructor beginning in their freshman year of high school and continues into their junior year; during junior year the student can apply for three terms of the foreign language. (example: SPAN101 taken as a freshman, SPAN102 taken as a sophomore, SPAN103 taken as a junior means that during your junior year you can sign up for SPAN101 fall term, SPAN102 winter term, and SPAN103 spring term at MHCC).
