Route surveying for roads and pipelines. The calculation of curve data for the design and construction of horizontal and vertical curves. Field procedures for staking horizontal curves, grades, and slope staking. Earthwork calculation and highway safety design.

Calculator with trig. functions, D.MS, polar to rectangular coordinates. Engineering computation paper, pencil, scale, compass, protractor, survey field book, foul weather clothing, computer disk(s)
LIST THE PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES OR STUDENT LEARNING COMPETENCIES AS DESCRIBED IN THE INSTRUCTIONAL LEARNING SYSTEM FOR THIS COURSE:
THE STUDENT SHOULD BE ABLE TO:
- Apply the basic principles of route surveying.
- Calculate the components of simple, compound and reverse curves.
- Calculate stationing and elevations along vertical curves.
- Layout on paper and in the field a simple circular curve.
- Determine grades and compute quantities of cut and fill materials including preparation of a mass diagram.
- Collect field data and use it to prepare a contour map.
- Demonstrate how to design a road from a contour map. This design includes all the computations, drawings and field notes associated with the horizontal and vertical curves as well as the tangent sections.

The student's grade will be based on quizzes, mid-term exams, homework, assignments, term project, lab assignments, and final exam.
