PE185WBT:  Backcountry Winter Travel and Camping

This course is designed for students interested in learning the basics of winter camping and backcountry travel. Students learn about and practice the design/construction of traditional and modern winter shelters including: igloos, snow caves, quinzees, snow trenches and protected tents. This course also covers the essentials of winter camping including winter expedition food selection and preparation, appropriate clothing selection, winter backcountry hazards and minimum impact techniques. Students also learn about and practice travel skills using modern snowshoes, cross-country skis, backcountry skis or a splitboard. Students learn how to choose a snowshoe or ski that is appropriate for the type of trip and snow conditions they might pursue.
