WL289 :  Wilderness First Responder

This course teaches how to respond to medical emergencies in the backcountry. This course is designed specifically to provide the tools to make critical medical and evacuation decisions in remote locations. The focus is on identifying symptoms and providing treatments in the backcountry given minimal first aid resources. lnstruction time is split between the classroom and completing practical skills, case studies and scenarios. Topics include, but are not limited to wound management and infection, realigning fractures and dislocations, improvised splinting techniques, patient monitoring and long term management problems, up-to-date information on all environmental emergencies, plus advice on drug therapies. Emphasis is placed on prevention and decision making, not the memorization of lists. Adult First Aid/CPR is included.
Prerequisite: Acceptance into the Wilderness Leadership and Experiential Education program.
