    Author and Education Advocate

    Jonathan Mooney page

Jonathan Mooney is an award-winning writer, speaker and education advocate. The dyslexic Mooney struggled to read in high school, and was told that he would likely spend his whole life flipping burgers – or worse, in prison. However, instead of prison he went to Brown University, graduated with honors and devoted his life to advocating for an education system that supports greater inclusion and diverse learning populations.

His speeches focus on a reimaging of the 21st century education system, promoting greater inclusion and youth empowerment and accounting for neurodiversity and the myth of normalcy. He offers concrete strategies to educators and emphasizes positive learning identity to counterbalance the self-defeating mindsets that students with learning disorders deal with day to day. And he celebrates educators as change agents and education as at the forefront of social transformation.

The Short Bus: A Journey Beyond Normal (2008)

Jonathan Mooney’s The Short Bus documents his experience journeying across America in an old short school bus, the kind used to transport students to special education programs. Along the way, he meets with inspiring students and confronts his own preconceptions about people with Down syndrome, deafness, blindness, ADHD, autism and other labeled disabilities and disorders.
