Announcements about MHCC Women’s Basketball
Posted March 7, 2011
Larry Davis, coach of the Mt. Hood Community College (MHCC) women’s basketball team for the past six years, has submitted his resignation, effective March 4, 2011.
In additional news about the MHCC women’s basketball program, the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges (NWAACC) has determined that disciplinary action should be taken against MHCC for alleged recruiting violations that occurred while Davis served as head coach of the team.
NWAACC has imposed a $1,000 fine, two years’ probation for the team, a two-year moratorium on recruiting by Coach Davis and a loss of two full scholarships (out of eight scholarships).
Our top priority is the exceptional women who have proudly represented MHCC both on and off the basketball court. MHCC administrators have met with the team to discuss these developments, as well as their competitive eligibility and achievement of their academic goals. The College has made counseling and academic advising services available to the students and will continue to keep them informed about the NWAACC ruling.
We are assessing the situation with regard to a likely appeal of NWAACC’s decision; how the hiring of a new coach may affect penalties assessed by NWAACC; how NWAACC's decision may affect eligibility for our student athletes and who will coach the team going forward.
MHCC has a long and successful history of women’s sports, including basketball. We are saddened by these developments, as MHCC has always placed an emphasis on support of its teams, as well as operating with the highest ethical standards and good sportsmanship.
