The Mt. Hood Community College (MHCC) Saints won the NWAACC volleyball championship Nov. 20 at the MHCC gymnasium and finished the season with an outstanding 35-4 win-loss record.
After losing to Walla Walla Community College on Saturday in five sets, the Saints, coached by Chelsie Speer, came back and beat a tough Spokane team in two sets to face off against Walla Walla for the championship.
“With one loss already in double elimination play, the Saints had to beat the Warriors in two matches,” said Kim Hyatt, dean of Health, Physical Education, Athletics, Aquatics and Recreation, “and they did it in dominating fashion.”
The Saints took the first match in three sets (25-15, 25-20, 27-25) and came back for the second two-out-of-three match without missing a beat (25-19 and 25-11), to win the championship.
The Saints picked up several accolades during the four-day Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges (NWAACC) tournament:
- Rylie Engelson was named the tournament most valuable player
- Demi and Devan Belshe were named to the all-tournament first team
- Natalie Dwight and Casi Johnson were named to the all-tournament second team
