More than 1,000 swimmers, coaches and spectators will visit Gresham Feb. 17-18 for the OSAA/US Bank/Les Schwab Tires Swimming State Championships. This is the 26th time the aquatic center at Mt. Hood Community College (MHCC) has hosted this prestigious event.
The meet will take place at the College’s 50-meter swimming pool, which is under a dome during the cooler months and under the sun and stars during the warmer months.
Preliminary races will be held on Friday, Feb. 17: 6A session 9-11:15 a.m., 4A, 3A, 2A and 1A session 1:45-4 p.m. and 5A session 6:30-8:45 p.m. The championship finals will be held the following day: 6A session 8 a.m.- noon, 4A, 3A, 2A and 1A session 1:45-4:45 p.m. and 5A session 6:30- 9:30 p.m. (The higher the number, the more students enrolled at a high school.)
Tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for students. Parking permits are waived during both days of this event.
MHCC is a tobacco-free campus.
MHCC opened the aquatic center in 1976, and renovated the 50-meter pool in 2007 to make it ideal for national-level competitive swimming. Each year, MHCC hosts more than 30 competitions, including meets for the Special Olympics, Speedo senior championships and training for U.S. water polo. In 2011, the aquatic center won a place in the Guinness Book of World Records for participating in the World’s Largest Swim Lesson.
Besides the 50-meter pool, the MHCC aquatic center is comprised of three indoor pools. For more information on the facilities and its programs, please call Jim Jackson, aquatic center manager, at 503 491-7244.
