Host a Student from Japan
Posted: January 4, 2013
Families who are interested in hosting a Japanese college student for three weeks in their homes are encouraged to contact Yoko Sato, MHCC part-time Japanese instructor and on-site Ryukoku University director, before Jan. 18, at firstname.lastname@example.org.
A host orientation meeting will be held Jan. 25, 6:30 – 8:30 p.m., in room AC2399 on the MHCC Gresham Campus, 26000 S.E. Stark Street.
The Japanese students, age 18 to 24, come from Ryukoku University to MHCC to participate in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classes. The classes are held on MHCC’s Gresham Campus each weekday, 9 a.m. – noon, Feb. 16 – March 10. In addition, students enhance their knowledge of American culture by taking field trips to downtown Portland, the Oregon Nikkei Legacy Center, Gresham High School, the Oregon coast and Mount Hood.
In order to give students the best possible experience, the college asks host families to provide breakfast and dinner, and ensure that students have transportation to and from MHCC. Host families must speak English while the student is present. An individual bedroom is preferred and a shared bathroom is acceptable. Host families will receive a stipend to help defray additional household expenses.
“It’s a wonderful experience,” says Elizabeth Gomez, MHCC Foundation accountant. She and her husband, Greg Gomez, MHCC communications dispatcher, have welcomed two Japanese students into their home. “It’s a great way to learn about another culture without having to pack a bag. We remain in touch with our students and consider them part of our family.”
