Mt. Hood Community College’s (MHCC) Forensics Team won the Silver Sweepstakes Award at the 2013 Pi Kappa Delta National Tournament and Convention in St. Louis, Mo., March 13-16.

The International Parliamentary Debate Association (IPDA) National Tournament announced that MHCC finished 5th in the nation for two-year colleges in the year-long Season Sweepstakes.

MHCC competed against 88 other two- and four-year colleges and universities from all over the country. MHCC students Kim Neal, Elsie Praeger, Ryan Rhodes and Stephanie Saracco represented the Saints. Saracco and Rhodes nabbed third place in British Parliamentary Debate. Saracco also won National Champion in After Dinner Speaking and second place in Poetry and Prose Interpretation. Rhodes earned an Excellent Award in Extemporaneous Speaking.

“None of this could have happened without the great leadership and coaching of Elizabeth Kinnaman, interim director of Forensics, and David Childers, assistant coach,” says Shannon Valdivia, MHCC Speech instructor and longtime forensics coach.
