Saints Finish in Third Place in NWAACC Softball Championship Tournament
Posted May 20, 2013
Our Saints came to battle May 19 against the NWAACC #1 ranked team, Wenatchee Valley Community College. The Knights and their University of Washington bound pitcher proved to be a very tough competitor as the Saints struggled to get their bats going and lost 6-1. Maycee Abendschein connected in the bottom of the seventh for a home run and Kylee Gaspar hit for a double but the Saints couldn't overcome the Knights.
The Saints then battled Douglas of British Columbia in their second game of the day. The Saints received home runs from Jamie Martin and Courtney McCarthy in the bottom of the fourth to take a 4-2 lead but the Royals came roaring back with three runs in the top of the sixth to take a 5-4 lead that they would never relinquish.
Unfortunately the loss brought the season to an end but we can all take a lot of pride in all that our Saints have accomplished this season! The 2013 Southern Region Champions finished in third place at the NWAACC Softball Championship Tournament with a 39-7 record and the Saints received multiple individual honors including National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-American honors for three of our Saints (Ann-Marie Guischer, McCarthy, and Teauna Hughes) including the NFCA Catcher of the Year (McCarthy), the Southern Region MVP (Hughes), and the Southern Region Pitcher of the Year (Guischer). Four Saints were named to the Southern Region First Team (Kristen Crawford, Hughes, Guischer and McCarthy), four Saints were named to the Southern Region Second Team (Absendshein, Gaspar, Lola Ciu and Heather Jett), and four Saints were named to the NWAACC All-Academic Team (Kali Van Cleave, Absendschein, Ciu, and Gaspar). Our head coach Meadow McWhorter was named the Southern Region Coach of the Year!
Thank you for all of your support this season!
