The student-produced newspaper for Mt. Hood Community College (MHCC) published its final edition for 2012-13 on Friday, June 7, while its staff took time to celebrate recent statewide honors.
The Advocate returned May 10 from the Oregon Newspaper Publishers Association (ONPA) Collegiate Day Awards event with 11 individual and staff awards – and also won first place for General Excellence in its classification, based on the quality of three complete issues scrutinized by judges.
The General Excellence award marked a first for MHCC and The Advocate. And, it capped a strong showing this academic year under student Co-Editors-in-Chief Mike Mata and John Tkebuchava.
The Advocate competed with nondaily student publications at Oregon colleges without a four-year degree journalism program – essentially, the state’s community colleges.
Linn-Benton Community College hosted the ONPA journalism seminar and awards event in Albany.
