MHCC Recognizes Distinguished Faculty
Posted June 28, 2013
Mt. Hood Community College (MHCC) has selected three outstanding instructors to receive the annual Distinguished Teaching Award: Chrissy Bloome, Michele Hampton and Lee Mitchell.
The award recognizes excellent teaching and service to students and peers, and encourages continued excellence in those areas. Each recipient learned about his or her award by a surprise visit from several MHCC administrators who brought gifts and congratulations. Recipients were lauded at the June 12 MHCC Board of Education meeting and each will be presented with a $500 check from the Foundation.
Bloome, a nursing instructor, was unanimously chosen by the selection committee. Students, colleagues and members of the professional healthcare and nursing community supported her nomination.
A nursing colleague wrote, "Chrissy's knowledge and enthusiasm for life in general, as well as her intense commitment to excellence, makes her an indispensible asset to the nursing program! Her students adore her!"
Bloome's students wrote, "Chrissy maintains the perfect balance of professionalism with a twist of fun and energy to provide an excellent learning environment." Another submitted, "Although the nursing program is challenging and has a grueling pace, Chrissy knows this and always applies a bit of humor. I have yet to leave the classroom without having laughed and I always feel my efforts were appreciated."
Hampton, an English composition instructor, received strong support from veterans and adult learners, which impressed the selection committee. One student wrote that Hampton "is one of the best teachers I've had in my 55 years of living! There aren't enough words to tell you of her true worth!" Another wrote, "I came back to school after 33 years and was feeling very fearful! She gave me self-confidence and has made a huge difference in my life!"
Hampton's colleagues praised her positive, flexible and tireless commitment to all that she does. "She is a pillar of the English department and a dynamic contributor to the work of the college!" noted one instructor.
Many students lauded Lee Mitchell, science and biology instructor, for his teaching methods:
- He creates a sound education foundation to enable us to accomplish our dreams!
- He teaches us to focus on concepts rather than memorization.
- He makes us ask how and why things work.
- He challenges us to hypothesize and predict with the concepts we have.
- He is a great teacher and truly wants the best for his students!
- He believes in us!
Mitchell's colleagues raved about his passion for his students and the college, for example: "Lee is constantly increasing his knowledge through extensive self-study, seminars and professional development activities."
Congratulations to these three distinguished teachers!
