MHCC and Part-Time Faculty & Tutors Agree on New Contract

The Mt. Hood Community College (MHCC) District Board of Education and members of the Part-Time Faculty & Tutor Association (PFTA) have approved a new four-year agreement.
“We are pleased the bargaining sessions have been productive, with both groups working collaboratively and collegially toward an agreement,” says Diane Noriega, Board chair. “I appreciate the hard work and attention put forth by Marilyn Pitts, PFTA president, and her bargaining team, and Ursula Irwin, associate vice president of Instruction, and her team.”
Noriega adds, “Part-time faculty and tutors play an important role at MHCC. We value the many contributions they make each and every day to teach, tutor, mentor and guide students.”
The agreement builds on the practices established in the prior contract to ensure that the college is able to attract and retain the best part-time faculty and tutors.
Pitts says the agreement “will improve the working life of MHCC’s part-time faculty and tutors. I’m really pleased with the results of our negotiations. Both the college and PFTA’s teams worked hard to get a reasonable contract.”
The contract is retroactive to July 1, 2013. The previous contract covered the four years ending June 30, 2013.
Bargaining teams for the PFTA and the college held pre-negotiation discussions in November 2012 to find common ground and build relationships of trust and respect. This process helped establish a professional and friendly tone and course of action that permeated and defined the negotiations.
