MHCC Students Invite Community to Forum on Sexual Assault
Posted: November 13, 2013
Every two minutes, someone in the U.S. is sexually assaulted. These crimes have no boundaries of race, age, language, gender, economic class, disability or religion. That’s why Associated Student Government (ASG) at Mt. Hood Community College and MHCC’s Public Safety department are hosting a forum Nov. 20, noon – 1 p.m., to educate students and the community about “Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention.”
This free event will be held in the Town & Gown room on the Gresham Campus, 26000 S.E. Stark St. Parking is free on all MHCC campuses, no permit required.
Consider these scenarios: A woman is raped on her way home from work. Across town, a young boy is terrified every time his bedroom doorknob turns and his stepfather enters. The following night, a young woman blacks out after drinking a laced cocktail and wakes up in a stranger’s house. Incidents like these unfold every day – some gain attention, while others are held deep inside those affected. These are just a few of the forms that sexual violence can take.

The Sexual Assault Resource Center (SARC), a non-profit organization, is joining in this important initiative to raise awareness about sexual violence, date rape, stranger rape, alcohol and sex, consent, blame and other related topics. SARC’s mission is to promote social justice by eliminating sexual violence in the community through education, support and advocacy. SARC operates a 24-hour crisis line (503-640-5311) staffed with trained advocates who provide crisis intervention, peer support, information and referral.
“As stakeholders in the success of our family, community and country, it is our job to get educated and mobilized,” notes Jonathan Albi, director of public safety & campus sustainability for ASG. In October, students organized a forum on domestic violence awareness.
