Gallery to Feature Not-so-abstract Paintings in April
Mt. Hood Community College (MHCC) welcomes featured artist Kathleen Buck to the Fireplace Gallery, April 1 – 29.
Buck’s exhibit, “Emerging from Abstracts,” is comprised of paintings with abstract backgrounds that the artist shapes into recognizable subjects, thereby “capturing a moment in time.”
She describes her approach as “the movement of the subject creating exciting angles that allow me to compose background shapes that can be as strong and interesting as the shapes of the subjects. The use of luminous bright colors and a strong use of light and dark patterns flowing throughout the painting unify the abstract and the real.”
Buck paints primarily in acrylics and says that thin, liquid acrylics, in particular, “give the luminosity of a watercolor and enhance the energy of the moment.” When she paints with thicker acrylics, she is able to create a texture that becomes a layered painting featuring great depth.
Buck is a member of the Watercolor Society of Oregon and an active member of the Arts Alliance of Yamhill County. Her works have won numerous awards at juried shows. Her paintings are in permanent collections on college campuses, the Allison Hotel in Newberg, Ore., and Oregon Health and Science University.
The Fireplace Gallery is located in the Student Union on MHCC’s Gresham Campus, 26000 S.E. Stark St. The gallery is open Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m., - 7 p.m., and Friday, 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. Parking on all campuses is free, no permit required.
