MHCC Lauds 3 Support Staff for Outstanding Service
Posted: April 4, 2014
Each year, Mt. Hood Community College (MHCC) employees, students and community members select up to three colleagues to receive the Outstanding Support Staff award. This award recognizes those who demonstrate dedication, professionalism, leadership and enthusiasm in their work and within the community.
The winners of the 2014 Outstanding Support Staff award are Sheila McQueen, Cecilia Pelayo and Jenny Ruelas.
McQueen, workforce development specialist at MHCC’s WorkSource office in Rockwood, received nominations from her colleagues because, “She is the personification of a positive attitude,” and inspires others with a “We can do this” attitude.
She interacts with hundreds of WorkSource clients each week, often dealing with people who are desperate to find a job. She offers them hope and encouragement, and boosts their self confidence. One job seeker says, “My résumé was bad and Sheila showed me how to fix it. She believed in me even when my confidence was gone. Sheila saved me.”
Written nominations lauded Pelayo, Adult Basic Skills administrative assistant, because she demonstrates a positive attitude toward MHCC and goes the extra mile to support students and employees. She exhibits excellent people and customer service skills and is always a true professional.
Ruelas, Transitions program assistant, received 22 nominations, many from students. One nomination reads, “Jenny is always thinking of others! She finds the bright side in any situation. She makes everyone feel they have received the best service possible!”
The MHCC District Foundation Board will present each winner with a $500 check in appreciation for her outstanding service to the college and the community. The MHCC District Board of Education will honor McQueen, Pelayo and Ruelas April 10.
