The award is a tradition in which MHCC recognizes community organizations and companies that have partnered with the college to help students achieve their dreams.
Just as Leatherman is world-renowned for its iconic multi-tool featuring all-in-one pliers, knives, screwdrivers, saw blades, etc., its support of MHCC is also multi-channeled. The company has relied on MHCC on numerous occasions to provide customized training for current workers to upgrade their skills. Leatherman has supported MHCC’s Industrial Technology programs, hosted tours for students, hired graduates and donated tools for the college Foundation auction.
Since 2011, Leatherman has partnered with Work Systems Inc., WorkSource Oregon and MHCC to recruit a production team and develop a customized training program for the company. This collaboration has resulted in successful careers for more than 100 workers in high-volume, high-quality manufacturing.
One such success story is Diana Pantoja, who received the training and now has a good job at Leatherman. She is using Leatherman’s tuition reimbursement program and is now studying accounting at MHCC. “Now I have more of a future in this company that I may not have thought of on my own,” says Pantoja.
In addition, Leatherman and MHCC have partnered on dozens of employee training programs in ESL, math, safety, blueprint reading and master trainer. Leatherman has invited MHCC advisers on-site to provide career and education counseling to their employees and to connect them with the college’s many academic opportunities.
