Japanese Consul General Honors MHCC Japanese Language Program

Consul General of Japan in Portland, Hiroshi Furusawa has recognized Mt. Hood Community College (MHCC) with a Commendation for the college’s Japanese language program.

The presentation, held at the college’s Visual Arts Theater on Monday, June 2, included college president, Dr. Debra Derr, students from the MHCC Japanese language class, along with class instructor Yoko Sato.

The Consul General expressed his sincere appreciation for the college’s long-term efforts in facilitating a Japanese language program and noted that as of 2012, Oregon as a whole is the second-highest state in the country in providing Japanese language programs.

“The promotion of Japanese language education around the world is important, not only to increase the number of people who are proficient in the language, but also to promote understanding across the political, economic and cultural sectors, “ stated Furusawa.
