New updated Lifeguarding courses! All classes are offered in one week during Spring Break. This is a great opportunity to take American Red Cross courses, including Lifeguard Training, in a condensed format before summer. See below for course descriptions and prices.

Lifeguarding Instructor
Lifeguard Practice
Reintroduce the basics of water rescue, in-water spinal management, CPR and First Aid skills in a practice environment. This class is a good complement to Lifeguard Challenge. No certificates will be issued, but if you need some practice then take this class before the Challenge. Textbooks are not included in the class fee.

Lifeguard Challenge
The Challenge course provides an opportunity for guards to update their certificate in Lifeguard Training, Community First Aid and/or CPR/PR without retaking the full Lifeguard Training course. Current certifications are not required. The student will demonstrate skills and be evaluated through written tests, skill evaluations and rescue scenarios. There will be no practice time allowed in this class. Students are expected to know how to perform all skills upon testing. Textbooks are not included in the class fee.

Lifeguarding Course

(includes CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer and First Aid)
Teaches participants the knowledge and skills to prevent and respond to aquatic emergencies. Content and activities prepare participants to recognize and respond quickly and effectively to emergencies and prevent drownings and injuries. Candidates must register for both the precourse and the full course.
Prerequisites for the full course:
Candidate must be 15 years old or older by the final day of the course.
Candidate must successfully complete the following skill tests on the first day of class:
Skill tests (covered in precourse*):
1. Swim 300 yards continuously
2. Swim 20 yards using front crawl or breaststroke, surface dive 7 to 10 feet, retrieve a 10-pound object, return to the surface, swim 20 yards back to the starting point with the object and exit the water without using a ladder or steps, within 1 minute, 40 seconds.
*Candidates may choose to register only for the precourse if they are unsure of their ability to pass the required skill tests listed above. Course fee is non-refundable.

Gives individuals the opportunity to demonstrate knowledge and skill competency outside a full-course setting. Participants have sole responsibility to prepare for the knowledge and skill evaluations. Anyone is eligible to participate in a challenge. Course fee is non-refundable.

Provides the opportunity to review the course content within a formal class setting. To be eligible, the participant must have successfully completed prior training within the last 2 years. Proof of prior training can be verified by showing an American Red Cross Universal Certificate indicating CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer, or a recognized equivalent certificate.
Please note: Textbooks and pocket masks are required for all Lifeguarding and CPR courses. Participant and instructor manuals are required for instructor courses.

Trains instructor candidates to teach basic-level Lifeguarding, Waterfront Lifeguarding, Waterpark Lifequarding and Shallow Water Attendant (all including first aid), Lifeguard Management, CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer, Administering Emergency Oxygen, Bloodborne Pathogens Training and Basic Water Rescue courses. Candidates also will become familiar with GuardStart and the Water Safety presentations.
Prerequisites:
Must be 17 years of age on or before the last scheduled day of the instructor course.
Must possess a Fundamentals of Instructor Training Certificate issued within the last year or possess a current national Health and Safety Services Instructor Authorization Certificate.
Must successfully complete the precourse session, which includes a written exam and series of skills and scenarios.

Trains instructor candidates to teach courses in the American Red Cross Swimming and Water Safety program by developing their understanding of how to use the course materials, how to conduct training sessions and how to evaluate participants progress.
Prerequisites:
Be at least 16 years of age on or before the final scheduled session of this course
Must possess a Fundamentals of Instructor Training Certificate issued within the last year or possess a current national Health and Safety Services Instructor Authorization Certificate.
Demonstrate the required swimming skills at Level 4 proficiency
Float on back for one minute
Tread water for one minute

Registration Information
Registration is open and is offered in four formats:
Online Registration
Go towww.mhcc.edu/aquatics to register. Please note that you must have a credit card to process the transaction and there will be an additional 6% fee for processing. Your registration will be confirmed via e-mail.
Telephone Registration
Call 503-491-7243. Please have your credit card number ready and your choice of classes before calling. Receipts will be mailed.
Mail-in Registration
Please indicate your choice of classes on the registration form, total price of selected classes, and enclose payment with the form. Accepted payment options are check, money order or Visa or MasterCard number and expiration date. Please do not mail cash. Receipts will be mailed.
Walk-in Registration
Mt. Hood Aquatic Center business hours are Monday-Friday 5:45 a.m.-8 p.m. and 8 a.m.-4 p.m. on Saturday. Walk-in registrations are accepted during business hours.
Registration and Refunds
Registration cannot take place the same day as the class offered (with the exception of Lifeguard Training after passing the precourse). Full refunds will only be granted 3 business days before the class begins.
Registration for Lifeguard Training assumes that the student’s competency as a swimmer is sufficient to participate in the course. Maximum refund for Lifeguard Training once the course has started is $50. Refunds are not given if a student participates in the course and fails to earn certification.
