Experience Native American Culture at College Pow-Wow
Tuesday, October 27, 2009 - Saturday, November 07, 2009
The sixth annual Kanawaksooma (Quiet Thunder) Celebration is coming to Mt. Hood Community College (MHCC) Saturday Nov. 7 from noon to 10 p.m. This cultural celebration offers traditional Native American music, dance, crafts, food and cultural enrichment for the whole family. Also, a traditional salmon and buffalo feed (a traditional Native Thanksgiving feast) begins at 5:30 p.m. Chakokumtux, MHCC’s Native American student club, welcomes the public to this free event.
Steve Llanes, from the Apache and Aztec Nations, will emcee, and Small Agency (northern traditional) will be the host drum. Children can enjoy cultural activities for all ages. Plus, there will be a fair of non-profit and private vendors, including a fry bread booth.
“This event gives the Native American Community, MHCC students and the greater Portland and Gresham area communities the opportunity to interact with each other, and create a healthy dialogue among different cultures,” said Renea Ly-Menchaca, president of Chakokumtux. “It’s a time to give thanks to MHCC and our Gresham and Portland communities for all of their support.”
The pow-wow is sponsored by Chako-Kum Tux, the Bow and Arrow Culture Club and the MHCC Associated Student Government. It will be held at the MHCC College gym, on the Gresham Campus. The grand entry ceremonies will be conducted at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. No alcohol, drugs or pets are allowed in this traditional cultural event.
