Mt. Hood Community College Partners with United States Forest Service to Hold Salmon Festival

Wednesday, November 04, 2009 - Sunday, November 15, 2009

In celebration of Mt. Hood Community College (MHCC) Geography Awareness Week, the College’s geography department is partnering with the United State Forest Service to hold a Salmon Festival at Multnomah Falls on Sunday, Nov. 15, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The goal of the festival is to provide a family-friendly educational experience about the life and habitat of the salmon. A number of the planned activities will focus specifically on children, including coloring and painting sheets related to salmon and environmental themes and a free salmon t-shirt for kids to paint.  There will be age appropriate information booklets for viewing that explains the life cycle of the salmon. MHCC geography students and Forest Service guides will be stationed along Multnomah Creek to answer questions about the salmon spawning in the stream. There will also be a salmon exhibit inside the visitors center.

“The Forest Service has been wonderful to work with,” said Chris Gorsek, Ph.D., MHCC geography instructor. “The great thing about the Multnomah Falls venue is that the creek is very accessible and people of any age or physical condition can view the salmon in the stream.  We are also lucky to have the resources of the Multnomah Falls Visitors Center, gift shop and restaurant close by.”

This event is free and open to the public.
