Adult High School Diploma Program Frequently Asked Questions
What options are available to students that never graduated High School?
Students have several options, such as the GED program or the Adult High School Diploma Program.
If the student is still high school age they can get their GED, an Adult High School Diploma, return to their home high school, or to an alternative program through their high school.
Students enrolled in the Adult High School Diploma Program at MHCC must be at least 18 years of age, unless they are referred by their district high school and are exempt from compulsory public / private instruction.
How should the student decide what the right option is for them?
We recommend that students that are lacking most of their high school credits receive their GED and students that are close to graduating and are proficient (or close to proficient) on the college placement test go for the Adult High School Diploma Program.
For a student to be considered ‘proficient’ or at college level, they must place into RD 115, MTH 60, and WR 115. Students do not need to be proficient before joining the AHSD Program, but will need to prove themselves proficient prior to receiving a diploma through the program.
What is the minimum number of credits a student must take through the program?
We require the student to complete one full credit of high school courses and ½ credit of either high school or college courses (to earn dual credit), with a minimum of 1½ credits total.
What is dual credit? How is the dual credit awarded?
Dual credit means that the student will receive high school credit and college credit for the same class. Only through specific college courses can the student earn dual credit. The breakdown of credit is:
- 1-2 college credits = .25 high school credit
- 3-4 college credits = .50 high school credit
- 5-6 college credits = 1.0 high school credits
What are the admissions requirements?
The local admission requirements are as follows:
- The student must apply for admission to the AHSD Program
- The student must complete the College Placement Test
- The student must complete Orientation packet
If the student decides to join the program, what steps would need to be taken?
If the student determines that they would like to join the Adult High School Diploma Program the following steps would need to be taken:
- Provide all official transcripts from high school and college.
- Provide a release from compulsory attendance if under age 18.
- Select classes with the student advisor.

What grades are accepted?
In evaluating the students’ previous transcripts grades all A, B, C, D or P grades will be accepted as passing. An F, NP, W or Incomplete grades will not be accepted.
Once the student is enrolled in the Adult High School Diploma Program and taking Mt. Hood Community College courses and/or High School courses, only grades A, B, C, or P will be accepted. Grades of D, F, NP, W and Incomplete will not be accepted.
All students looking to earn an AHSD will be evaluated using the same criteria. Credit will not be given for life experience or CLEP testing scores.

What are the attendance and tardy policies?
You can’t miss more than 2 classes or you will be withdrawn with no credit or refund. Tardies under 20 minutes count as a quarter absence. Tardies between 20-40 minutes count as a half absence. Anything over 40 minutes counts as a complete absence and will be counted against your in-class time.
