What is this career?

Mental Health and Human Service professionals help people in a wide variety of settings and work with a tremendously diverse population. We prepare students to work in mental health, addiction treatment, community corrections, youth work, gerontology, schools and many other settings. Professionals support the emotional, social, cognitive and physical needs of clients.

Is this for me?

If you are caring and compassionate with a passion for learning the professional skills of helping this career is for you! Our program has a focus on personal growth as well as professional training in counseling and interviewing skills, case management, group counseling and a strong base in human development and counseling theories. We also offer specialized training in addiction treatment. The Mental Health and Human Service program is an excellent blend of experiential and classroom learning. Students are using their skills in the community during 4 terms of internship!

What are my options?

The Mental Health and Human Service Program grants a 2-year Associate of Applied Science degree and a 1year certificate in Youth Work. The degree transfers smoothly to Portland State University Child and Family Studies Program, Portland State University BSW program, and Concordia Universitys Bachelors in Social Work. What are typical careers?

Human service professionals may work in a variety of settings as case managers, counselors, social workers, client advocates, performing intake and assessment, facilitating groups, community corrections professionals and more. Job outlook is very strong both locally and nationally.
