Radio Broadcasting

This program page is for a professional technical program that recently updated its offerings. Radio Broadcasting has not significantly changed its primary training emphasis but has enhanced class offerings inside the new Integrated Media Program. If you are looking at starting in Fall, 2007, please check out the NEW Integrated Media: Broadcasting program. If you are/were enrolled in the Radio Broadcasting program, please contact your program advisor, JD.Kiggins@mhcc.edu.

Graduates of the Radio Broadcasting Program at Mt. Hood Community College are working all over the United States, but most find jobs in Oregon. In fact, you can call any radio station in Portland and talk to a former student, or get good feedback on our radio program. We believe our radio program at Mt. Hood is one of the best available anywhere. It enjoys strong support from the radio industry, including support from the Oregon Association of Broadcasters.

As technology evolves, the role of the broadcaster has evolved along with it. Students in Radio Broadcasting option acquire technical proficiency with digital audio tools, understand the theoretical concepts behind a variety of digital media, and develop the skills needed to work in the industry as a production and promotions director, operations manager, and program director. If you're interested in music production, sound design for film, video games and the Internet, Radio Broadcasting offers a broad range of multimedia skill development emphasizing professional audio skills. Instruction includes an even balance between theory classes and practical, hands-on production laboratories.

Employment Opportunities

Students learn fundamental concepts and procedures in recording and broadcasting and explore emerging industry technologies that prepare them for entry level jobs such as:

  • Broadcast Presenter
  • Program Director
  • Operations Manager
  • Recording Engineer
  • Producer
  • DJ
  • Advertising Copywriter
  • Sound Designer for Film and Multimedia
  • Location Recordist for Film and Television

Students will become proficient with industry standard tools and practice in the fields of broadcasting and audio production for other disciplines such as film and video, animation, music, and web based multimedia.

Internships

There are many opportunities to collaborate through working in the college’s radio stations or by serving on creative teams with other students in the Integrated Media program. In addition, there are many outside internship opportunities at commercial radio stations in the Portland market. Students earn credit while serving on the staff as an intern and develop networking skills and learn, first hand, about the broadcasting industry.

What's new for 2007

Starting Fall 2007, Broadcasting becomes an option area within MHCC's new Integrated Media AAS degree program (pending approval from the Oregon Department of Education). Upon completion, students will be prepared for positions in the broadcasting and creative services industry. Students study an even mix between theory classes and practical, hands-on production laboratories. Students learn to apply fundamental concepts and procedures in recording and broadcasting as well as explore emerging technologies.
