Television Production Technology

Television Production Technology has not significantly changed its primary training emphasis but has enhanced class offerings inside the new Integrated Media Program. Television Production Program Highlights

Currently the Television Production Program is one of four professional technical programs within the Integrated Media Department. Audio, design, still and moving image techniques form the first level of training for the creative services industry. Students learn though experience-based courses how to create scripts, acquire media and and work in digital environments. By participating in a collaborative team environment, students broaden their exposure to and expertise in media production, camera operation, non-linear editing and a wide variety of distribution formats.

2007 Video Option

Starting in Fall 2007, the Integrated Media Video Option (pending approval from the Oregon Department of Education) emphasizes digital filmmaking with foundation skills that easily transfer to work in broad creative spectrum—narratives, documentaries, commercial/public-service announcements, music videos and experimental formats. Traditional and digital filmmaking is explored from historical, philosophical, aesthetic and technical perspectives. Video majors collaborate with students in other disciplines, such as with photographers, sound and graphic designers. Contact Jack Schommer for more information about this new program.

Employment Outlook

Video production presents a variety of career options, all structured to develop a broad range of entry level skills to prepares graduates for opportunities in a variety of creative service industry openings.

Basic video production jobs include camera operator, production assistant or assistant editor. Digital video advances have created a different set of openings for people with visual production skills. With some additional computer knowledge, you could move into multimedia design, working with Internet based media communication.

The motion picture and creative services industries continue to grow in the Pacific Northwest presenting a variety of production openings. These are temporary, part time and primarily independent contractor type openings but offer rewarding work in an exciting field. Finally there are many mobile sports and independent production units working the metro area that present entry-level opportunities to graduates.

Production Facilities

MHCC features professional production studios and NLE edit stations running Apple’s Final Cut Pro Studio Suite®, or Avid DV Express®. Electronic field production equipment is professional level Camcorders, support, Grip and audio. The facility supports MiniDV, DVcam, Beta SP formats.

Software instruction focuses on Macintosh OSX 10.4 running the Apple Pro applications, Final Cut Pro v5, Sound Track v2, DVD Studio Pro v3, Motion v2 and LiveType v2, Plus Final Draft v7, DigiDesign ProTools v7, AfterEffects Pro v5.5 and Adobe CS2.
