Curricular Practical Training (CPT)

What is curricular practical training?

  • Employment that is an integral part of an established curriculum, in the student’s course of study, i.e. an internship required for degree completion. Curricular training always occurs during the program of study.
  • Employment may be full or part-time. If full-time (i.e. 20 hours or more per week) for more than 12 months, the student is not eligible for optional practical training after graduation.

Am I eligible for curricular practical training?

To be eligible to apply, students must have been in lawful status for nine consecutive months and in a degree program that requires employment such as an internship for all students in that program.

How do I apply for curricular practical training?

  1. Provide a copy of your program curriculum page as proof that employment is an integral part of your degree requirements.
  2. Obtain a letter of offer from the employer on company letter head and must include the type of employment, dates of employment, employer's name and address and whether the employment is part-time or full-time.
  3. Submit all of the above information to the International Admissions Evaluator.

If you are eligible, the International Admissions Evaluator will create a new I-20 for you authorizing curricular practical training. An "EAD" (Employment Authorization Document) is NOT required for curricular practical training. There is no fee for authorization of curricular practical training.
