Program Extension
As an F-1 student, you have been admitted to study in the United States for a certain period of time known as Duration of Status. You are not required to apply for an extension of stay as long as you are maintaining status (passing at least 12 credits per term) and making normal progress towards completion of your program of study.
However, if you are not able to complete a full course of study before the completion date listed on your I-20, you must apply for an extension. Please note that only students who have been delayed due to compelling academic or medical reasons will be granted an extension. Failing classes and academic suspension are not acceptable reasons for a program extension.
How do I apply?
- Meet with the International Adviser to complete the Extension of Stay Recommendation form.
- Write an explanation of why you need an extension.
- Obtain new, current financial documents verifying you have the funds to pay for the remainder of your schooling.
Submit all of the above to the International Admissions Evaluator. All documents must be submitted before the end date on your I-20. The International Admissions Evaluator will create a new I-20 for you with a new end date if you meet the criteria for a program extension.
NOTE: Students who are ineligible for a program extension as stated above, are out of status and must apply for reinstatement under the provisions of paragraph (f)(16) of the F-1 Student Regulations.
