Fequently Asked Questions
Is it really important to breastfeed my child?
YES! The primary benefit of breast milk is nutritional and enhanced immunity
for the baby. Human milk contains just the right amount of fatty acids, lactose,
water, and amino acids for human digestion, brain development, and growth. Human
milk contains at least 100 ingredients not found in formula. Your child will
be getting the best possible start in life.
How do I use the pump?
You will need to buy a “Medela” kit. The kit will snap into the
pump. The staff at the Health and Wellness Resource Center will train you in
the use of the pump. You can also watch a
video and written instructions are always available.
How do I get a kit?
You can purchase the Medela kit at the Family Birth Center (FBC) at Legacy Mt.
Hood Medical Center, located at 24800 SE Stark St, 503-675-1500. The kits are
$45 and yours to keep. If you are on WIC or might be eligible for WIC, you can
obtain a kit through the WIC office, (503) 988-3503.
What happens if I forget my kit at home?
A spare kit is available through the Health and Wellness Resource Center. It
may be borrowed for use in this situation. Staff from the Health and Wellness
Resource Center will provide further instructions. This kit can not be loaned
on a long term basis.
When can I use the breast pump?
You can use the breast pump during hours when the College Center is open, 8
am – 7 pm. You will need to sign up on a schedule through the Health and
Wellness Resource Center for when you think you will be using the pump so it
does not conflict with other breastfeeding mothers.
How do I get the pump?
The staff at the College Center desk will check it out to you. You are required
to return it when you are done. Failure to return the pump may result in a hold
being placed on your student records.
Where will I use the pump?
The college has designated a specific location for use of the pump. From the
main College Center, go down the stairs to the lower level. The women’s
restroom (RM 56) is to your right. The designated area is in the lobby area
of this restroom. A curtain for privacy and seating area are available.
What if my schedule changes?
If your schedule changes, notify the staff of the Health and Wellness Resource
Center staff. They will assess the schedule for other available times.
What if I don’t need the pump any longer?
If you no longer need the pump please notify the Health and Wellness Resource
Center. Your name will be taken off the schedule so others will know when the
pump is available.
I have never breast fed before. Is there someone I can talk to?
Specific staff at the Health and Wellness Center can discuss use of the pump
and provide resources for lactation support. Please make an appointment with
Crystal Riley or Chrissy Bloome so you can be given the time that you need and
deserve. Call 503-491-7125 to make an appointment.
