Admission Process
The Cosmetology Degree Program is an open-entry program but is filled on a space-available basis. Students are enrolled by instructor permission. Interested students should follow the steps listed below.
Getting Started
- The Admission Form
- All new students must complete an admission form. There is a one-time $25 non-refundable admission fee.
- The fee is assessed at the time of registration for all new students registering for credit courses.
- You will receive an admissions confirmation letter which includes your MHCC ID#.
- You need this number to access online Web services, which include registration.
- Skills Assessment – The MHCC College Placement Test (CPT)
Success in the program requires certain skill levels in reading, writing and math. The minimum skill proficiency required for admission to this program are equal to:

The Mt. Hood Community College Placement Test (CPT)
The CPT is a non-timed skills assessment test given on a walk-in basis. There is no fee to take the CPT. Test score results will be available upon completion of the test. For purposes of admission to the Cosmetology program, the CPT must be taken at Mt. Hood Community College. Applicants who live more than two hours away can take the test by proctor. Please call Testing Services for more information, 503-491-7678. College Placement Test results will remain valid for two years.
Students who choose to retest will need to complete a Retest Self-Referral Form, which is available in the Testing Center or Academic Advising and Transfer Center. If your CPT scores indicate you are not ready for the Cosmetology program, you will be advised to take a course or courses in preparation to begin the program at a later date.

Prior College Coursework
The CPT (portions of, or all) may be waived if an applicant has completed college level coursework with a “C” or higher grade in reading, writing, and math. Official transcripts must be submitted to the Admissions and Records Office.
- Faculty Advising – Term planning
- Once you have your MHCC ID# you need to come into the Cosmetology Department to pick up a signed enrollment form for the proper COS class and section number.
- Then proceed to Student Services to enroll in person.
