Admissions Guidelines and Criteria 2009 - 2010

The Cosmetology Degree Program is an open-entry program but is filled on a space-available basis. Students are enrolled by instructor permission. Interested students should follow the steps listed below.

Getting Started

  • All new students must complete an admission form. There is a one-time $25 admission fee.
  • The fee is assessed at the time of registration for all new students registering for credit courses.
  • You will receive an admissions confirmation letter which includes your MHCC ID#.
  • You need this number to access online Web services, which include registration in General Education classes.
  • Once you have your MHCC ID# you need to come into the Cosmetology Department to pick up a signed enrollment form for the proper COS class and section number.
  • Then proceed to Student Services to enroll in person.
  • Remember to bring your picture ID and social security card.

Skills competencies assessment The College Placement Test (CPT)
Success in the program requires certain skill levels in reading, writing and math. The minimum skill competencies required for admission to this program are equal to the completion of Reading 90, Writing 90 and Math 10 (placement into RD115, WR115, and MTH20). You can demonstrate your skills competency through one of the following:

  1. The Mt. Hood Community College Placement Test (CPT)
The CPT is a non-timed skills assessment test given on a walk-in basis. There is no fee to take the CPT. Test score results will be available upon completion of the test. For purposes of admission to the Cosmetology program, the CPT must be taken at Mt. Hood Community College. Applicants who live more than two hours away can take the test by proctor. Please call Testing Services for more information, 503-491-7678. College Placement Test results will remain valid for two years.

Students who choose to retest in reading or writing will need to complete a Retest Self-Referral Form, which is available in the Testing Center or Academic Advising and Transfer Center. Students who desire to retest in mathematics, must meet with an advisor and complete an Individual Placement/Retest Referral form. If your CPT scores indicate you are not ready for the Cosmetology program, you will be advised to take a course or courses in preparation to begin the program at a later date. Exceptions to the minimum skills competencies may be made when a program has unfilled positions.

  2. Prior College Coursework
The CPT may be waived if an applicant has completed college level coursework with a C or higher grade in reading, writing, and math. Official transcripts must be submitted to the Admissions and Records Office.
