Body fat percentage measurements are done with a noninvasive bioimpedance analyzer. This device is used to estimate an individual’s body fat volume (mass) and percentage by weight.
To have your body fat percentage measured, you will be asked for some basic information, then asked to stand and hold the device with your arms straight out. Within moments, you will have an estimate of your body fat percentage.
In certain cases, the body fat percentage that this device will estimate can be significantly different from the actual body fat percentage. These circumstances include:
- Growing children
- Elderly people
- Post-menopausal women
- People with a fever
- People with swelling (e.g., in the feet)
- People with osteoporosis
- Body builders or athletes
- People undergoing dialysis
- Altered hydration status (due to exercise, right after a bath or sauna, after alcohol consumption or large amount of fluid intake within 1-2 hours)
Recommended times for measurement include:
- After waking up
- Before lunch and about 2 hours or more after breakfast
- In the afternoon about 2 hours or more after lunch and before taking a bath or eating dinner
- Before going to bed and about 2 hours or more after dinner (the HWRC is not open in the evening when the College Center is closed).
