Citation Style Guides
Citation styles are formatting rules for citing other authors’ work within your paper (in-text or parenthetical citations) and in a bibliography at the end of your paper (References or Works Cited lists). For an introduction to citation styles, try this Citing Information Module from UNC.
Ask your instructor which citation style you should use. Many instructors allow you to choose any style, as long as you are consistent in following its rules. The most common citation styles are: APA for social sciences; MLA for humanities; CSE (formerly CBE) for sciences; and Chicago for publishing in humanities and social sciences.
In the MHCC Library, you’ll find the current editions of citation manuals at the reference desk. You may also check out older editions of the APA, MLA, and Chicago manuals.

Citation builders are online tools to help you format your resources in a specific style. Remember that these tools are not magic and are sometimes incorrect! It’s always a good idea to verify your citation formats in the official manual.
If you have a specific question that isn’t addressed here, contact your instructor. You can also ask a librarian or arrange to meet with a tutor.
