Graphic Design Program Faculty
Christina Maier, MHCC’s Graphic Design Program Director, earned a BFA in Graphic Design from Arizona State University. Her graduate studies have been at the University of Kansas and Kent State University in Ohio. Previous teaching experience comes from appointments at the University of Kansas and the University of Arizona before coming to MHCC in 1988. Her professional design experience was as an editorial designer for magazines in Kansas and Arizona. She served as the publication designer for the University of Kansas. In Tucson, Arizona, she owned White Space Studio, a design company that specialized in annual reports, magazine design and periodical re-designs. She has continued to freelance since moving to the Northwest. She teaches GD 114, 115 and 116: Digital Typography I, II, and III, GD 236: Portfolio, GD 246: Digital Publication Design and ART 279: Interactive Media Design, IM179: Digital Tools & Workflow and IM260: Professional Pratice for Integrated Media.
Doug McDonnell has been the Senior Graphic Designer for Mt. Hood Community for over eight years. He has a Bachelor of Science degree in Advertising and Graphic Design from Utah State University. He has won numerous Paragon Awards from the National Council for Marketing. Previously employed as the graphic designer for the Multnomah Education Service District, Doug specializes in institutional branding programs. He teaches the second year sequence, GD249: Graphic Design Practicum class where he shephards the students through a dozen real-life projects, from concept through press-check over the course of three terms. He's a wizard with all the graphics applications and can pitch a pretty mean concept as well.
Richard Harris was most recently Creative Director for Wacom Technology in Vancouver, Washington. He's also been an Art Director for Grady Britton Advertising and Freightliner Trucks. He's written and illustrated numerous articles for Photoshop User magazine and SBS Digital Design to educate Photoshop and Painter users. Rich contributed content and script for “Power Photo Editing in Photoshop 7” training video. He developed curriculum and taught hands-on classes in Photoshop at Photoshop World. He conducted and developed seminars in digital art and photographic retouching for Siggraph, Macworld and Rocky Mountain Digital Arts Center. He revamped Wacom’s Tips as a web-based educational and sales tool and created more than 100 tips that train over 20,000 unique visitors to Wacom's website per month in Photoshop, Paint Shop Pro, Flash and Painter. He's a master user of Photoshop, Illustrator, Paint Shop Pro, and Painter. Rich teaches the first year digital software sequence, GD145 and 146.
Jon Larson recently moved to Portland from Santa Barbara, California where he had his own design and photography business, LarsonImages for ten years. He's been a lecturer at Brooks Institute of Photography. Jon's expertise includes graphics, advertising, photography, mulitmedia and web design. He has a BS in Applied Art and Design from California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo. Jon will teach the first year sequence, GD120, 121 and 122: Graphic Design I, II, and III.
David Maier teaches GD240, 241 & 242, the web design sequence. His BFA is from University of Arizona in Graphic Design. He's been an Art Director at Graphic Media and Wagonner Edstrom. For the past 10 years, he's owned and operated Third Door, Inc., a web development firm specilizing in artist web sites for Capital Records, Dreamworks and Warner Bros. Music.
