As well as teaching a variety of literature and composition classes at the college, I am currently developing the division's courses in film studies. Movies, like many written texts-from Shakespeare plays to slave narratives, from contemporary short stories to memoirs of Holocaust survivors-reveal their creators' visions of the world around them, and consequently they should be studied in terms of their artistic and ideological contributions.
I am particularly interested in the political nature of artistic production and encourage my students to question the "truths" in any texts that they may encounter, be they newspaper articles or novels, documentaries or poems. I believe that students learn most effectively when they produce the knowledge themselves-through active participation in class, group presentations, and self-guided study. The culmination of all this work comes in their ability to express themselves clearly in their writing, which is, whether we like it or not, a form of representation.
He is currently the English Department Chair. |
