Pro-Tech Evironment

  • Class size of 18-22 students
  • Well lighted and ventilated lab
  • Hands-On environment appeals to a wide variety if student learning styles
  • Up to date welding equipment

Close, Long-Term Relationship With Other Students

  • Students learn to work as a team
  • Students learn to co-exist and collaborate successfully with others
  • Time is adequate for major projects, from planningto completion

Close, Long-Term Relationship With Instructor

  • Long-term exposure allows instructor to know each student personally
  • Instructor can give personalized attention, advice and guidance
  • Allows time for students to build confidence and trust in instructor
  • Getting to know students allows instructor to "fit" the student in industry where their skills and temperament are best suited

Students Learn Academic Skills

  • Students learn applied academic skills in a non-threating environment
  • Students see how academic skills are relevant and even essential outside the classroom
  • Students apply academic skills to projects immediately
  • Students develop life long skills

Students Learn Marketable Skills

Students learn a marketable skill, and expect a starting salary of $20,000+ on successful completion of the welding program.

Students are able to:

  • begin a career with a firm foundation
  • earn money for College expenses
  • have the foundation for a career in another field

  • Learning a skill builds self-esteem and confidence
  • Competence in one skill leads to bigger goals and higher skills
  • Skills provide hobbies, utility, and entertainment for a lifetime (similar to Sports and P.E., Art, Music, Literature, Foreign Language, ect.)

Who IS a Good Candidate for Pro-Tech Welding?

  • Students who plan to attend college - MHCC is College and Welding Technology is at Mt. Hood Community College
  • Students who want a life long skill
  • Students who want to get a good paying job to save for further education
  • Students who like to put things together
  • College-bound students who want a degree in Welding Metallurgy or Engineering

Who Might NOT Be a Good Candidate for Pro-Technical Education?

  • Those who put little value in hands on work
  • Students looking for an easy place to kill time (Professional Technical Education is not easy; they need to be sent elsewhere)
