Each year in the month of March, the basketball sporting world goes crazy. The month is referred to as March Madness! When 16 teams make a bid for the NWAACC Championships in Tri-cities Washington.

This year the Mt Hood Saints went as the 4th seed out of the Southern Region. Giving the Saints an opening round match-up versus the Skagit Valley Cardinals,

who were the #1 seed out of the Northern Region. The Saints would give the Cards a battle to remember, tough defense and intimidating intensity would lead to a very close game. In the final minutes Skagit Valley would pull away for a 79-72 victory sending the Saints to the consolation bracket, fearing elimination. In the second round The Saints would face Highline, and to true form took it to them out rebounding and outrunning an active Thunderbird defense. The Saints would go on to win 83-64 sending Highline home. The next rounds match-up was versus Bellevue a team the Saints had played earlier in the season winning only by three. After what seemed like a long back and forth effort came down to the wire, and team defense prevailed as a turnover in the last moments pushed the Saints into the final round to play for fifth place game against the Trailblazers of Centralia. "At the beginning of the season the team said they wanted to get to the championship," said freshman guard Brooke Bahme "to be playing in this game is what we've been working for all this time, it's such a great feeling!" The Saints would come out on fire, blanking the Trailblazers for the first six minutes, but eventually Centralia would claw their way back and tie the game. With only seconds on the clock, Coach Davis called a timeout and asked the team what they wanted to run. After a consensus, the team broke the huddle and walked onto the floor. With only seconds left Sophomore Alexandra Melonson found sophomore forward Jacki Cunningham wide open at the top of the key who would attempt a three. We couldnt have had a better person attempt that shot, Jacki was the hottest hand on the floor. (Coach Davis) With some thrilling bounces and the shooters touch the ball fell through the net and the Saints would go on to win 64-61, taking home the trophy for 5th place overall in the NWAACCs! The Southern Region would have a very strong showing finishing in 4 of the top 8 positions. Lane (#1), Umpqua (#3), Mt Hood (#5) and Clackamas (#6).

It was a great end to a memorable season. Our philosophy this season was to go out and compete against the best, to prepare ourselves properly so that we peak at the right time. I am proud of these ladies and for what they have accomplished. Coach Davis
