Off-Campus Access Guide

Note: For access to the ARTstor database, see Accessing ARTstor from off-campus

MHCC provides access to library databases and eBooks for current students and staff only. When accessing an online resource from off-campus, permission is verified via a proxy server. You will be asked to enter your last name and MHCC identification number to verify your current affiliation with the College.

If you encounter problems accessing an online resource, please follow the steps outlined in this guide:

Step 1: Check your log-in information:

Type your last name in the first box (spelling counts!). Type your six-digit MHCC identification number in the second box. This is the number you use to register for classes; you'll find it on your Student ID card or employee photo ID.

Step 2: Check your browser:

Make sure you are using a supported web browser for your operating system:

Operating System Compatible Web Browsers*
Windows Vista Microsoft IE 7.0; Firefox 2.0
Windows 2000 Microsoft IE 5.5
Windows XP Netscape 6.0; Mozilla I.5; Firefox 0.9.I
Mac OSX 10.2 Safari 1.2
Mac OSX 10.3 Microsoft IE 5.2
Mac OSX 10.4 Netscape 6.0; Mozilla I.5; Firefox 0.9.I
Linux Netscape 6.0; Mozilla I.2; Firefox 0.9.I

* Newer versions of these browsers are also supported

Note: The AOL browser is not compatible with off-campus connections to the Librarys online resources as AOL does not support proxies. AOL users: please minimize all AOL windows and launch a separate browser, such as Microsoft IE.

Step 3: Check your browser settings:

Enable cookies: Cookies must be enabled on your browser in order for the proxy connection to work. If you are unsure how to do this please click here for instructions.

Temporarily disable pop-up blockers: Some online resources use pop-up windows to display results. You may wish to disable any pop-up blocking software while accessing the Library’s databases. For information on using the windows pop-up blocker click here.

Close any other browser windows that may be open.

Step 4: Download missing plug-ins:

Java: Java is required to access many of the Library's online resources. Most computers come with Java already installed. However, if you receive an error message saying java is not installed, or the page is not displaying correctly you can download the latest version of the java plug-in here. It is free.

Adobe Acrobat Reader: Some article results may be viewed only as a PDF document. If you are having trouble viewing PDF files try downloading the latest version of Adobe Reader here. It is free.

Step 5: Disable conflicting software:

Web accelerator: Dial-up users: please disable any web accelerator software you may be using. This may often be done through an icon in the system tray. Do not use Google web accelerator while searching the Library’s online resources as this poses a security risk.

Identity protection: Disable any identity protection software you may be using (such as GhostSurf) as it may interfere with our proxy server.

Firewall: Try disabling any firewall software you may be using. Please note that Windows XP SP2 has a built in firewall. You can disable this through the control panel. You’ll find instructions here.

Step 6: Ask us for help!

The 5 steps above are proven to fix most off-campus database access problems. For additional assistance, please call a Librarian at 503-491-7516 or Ask a Librarian via email.
