Children’s Swim Lessons Descriptions And Requirements


INFANT/TODDLER          
Merbabes, a parent and child class, is available for children from 8 months through 3 years of age. Merbabe classes are listed under Children’s Special Programs in this booklet
PRESCHOOL AGE

The child must be at least 3 years old to start preschool lessons. This category continues until entry into first grade. Instructor to student ration is 1:6.

Children ages 3-4 years and their parents can also participate in Parent and Child class. This is a water adjustment class for preschoolers who need more one-on-one time before joining group lessons.

SCHOOL AGE
The child must be in first grade or older. Instructor to student ratio varies from 1:8 to 1:10 as a maximum.
LEVEL 1
Level 1 is an initial introduction to the water environment.
LEVEL 1.5
Level 1.5 is a basic swimming class in which swimmers will gain confidence in moving independently while on the front and back.
LEVEL 2
Level 2 will build confidence for the swimmer while introducing front crawl and backstroke.
LEVEL 2.5
Level 2.5 will introduce rotary breathing, dolphin kick and treading water. The focus of this level is proficiency, stroke refinement and endurance of front crawl and back crawl.
LEVEL 3
Level 3 introduces elementary backstroke, butterfly and basic diving. The focus will be increased proficiency and endurance of front crawl, back crawl and treading water.
LEVEL 3.5
Level 3.5 introduces breaststroke, underwater swimming, feet first surface dives and standing dives. The focus will be increased proficiency and endurance of front crawl, back crawl, butterfly and elementary backstroke.
LEVEL 4
Level 4 introduces scissor kick, rotary kick, sculling and survival float. The focus will be increased proficiency and endurance of front crawl, back crawl, butterfly, elementary backstroke and treading water.
LEVEL 5
Level 5 introduces flip turns, sidestroke, survival swimming, long shallow dives, as well as tuck and pike surface dives. The focus will be continued proficiency, stroke refinement and endurance of front crawl, back crawl, butterfly and elementary backstroke.
LEVEL 6
At this level swimmers have the choice of the following tracts: Personal Water Safety, Lifeguard Preparedness, Fitness Swimmer or Fundamentals of Diving. These tracts will be offered at different times throughout the year.
In addition to the specialized tracts listed above, the intent of this level is to refine strokes so swimmers swim them with ease. The following competitive strokes will be worked on to increase efficiency: freestyle (crawl stroke), back crawl, breaststroke and butterfly.
Personal Water Safety
This tract includes the use of lifejacket skills, swimming and self-rescue techniques, and basic safety rules for boating and open water.
Lifeguard Preparedness
This tract will introduce the swimmer to the skills needed to be a successful lifeguard. Skills include care of a choking victim, recognizing an emergency, assisting in water related emergencies and spinal injury management.
Fitness Swimmer
Swimmers will learn to use a pace clock, pull buoys, fins and hand paddles, and also learn training principles.
Fundamentals of Diving
Fundamentals of diving will introduce basic diving from the side and from a diving board. Swimmers will also learn the approach and hurdle from a diving board as well as diving in a tuck and pike position.
