Petitioning to Remove Tuition Charges


A student may file a petition if there were serious and compelling circumstances beyond the student’s control which prevented the student from attending college during the first four weeks of the term. The request, with all documentation, must be submitted to the Admissions, Registration and Records Office.

Mt. Hood Community College’s appeal committee will accept your completed petition for review once you have met the petition requirements listed below. If you fail to meet the requirements, your petition will be returned without review.

Hardship

If one of the following hardships prevented you from continuing in your classes during the first four weeks of the term, you may be eligible for a refund or to have the charges removed.

  • Illness or injury of a nature that significantly impacted your ability to attend classes.
  • Illness or injury of an immediate family member where you are the primary caregiver and are unable to continue attending classes.
  • Mandatory military or career transfer outside the Portland Metro area.
  • Mandatory work shift change that conflicts with your scheduled classes.
  • Death of an immediate family member that significantly impacted your ability to attend classes.

Petitions will not be accepted for failure to attend or for any misunderstanding of written policies and procedures.

Petition Requirements

  1. Complete the petition form.
  2. Compile independent documentation supporting the reason for your request to be included with your petition form, and any information that would be helpful to the committee.
  3. Send the completed petition and any documentation by the deadline to:

Notification
A written notice stating the outcome of your request will be mailed to you. If you do not receive notification within 30 days, please call 503-491-7393.

  • If you paid via check or money order a check will be mailed to you at the address on file.
  • If you paid with a bank/credit card, refunds are first credited back to the card, up to the amount charged. All other refunds will be by check made payable to the student and mailed to the address on file.
