Emergency Medical Technician Basic

Course Description:
EMTX12 and EMTX13
Taught in two consecutive terms, this course represents the first phase of training
in the Emergency Medical Technician career structure. The course emphasizes
the development of student skill in the recognition of symptoms of illness and
injuries and proper procedures of emergency care. In addition, the student is
instructed in the basics of operation of the emergency ambulance within the
emergency medical service system.
Prerequisites
- Students must be 18 years of age at the time of the State/National Exam
- There are entry-level expectation for reading, writing, and math skill
level. Please contact MHCC Academic Advising and Transfer Center at 503-491-7315
for additional information regarding placement testing.
- “Healthcare Provider CPR CAR” offered by the American Heart
Association (to contact the training center, call 503-223-0100) or “CPR
for the Professional Rescuer” offered by the American Red Cross (to
contact the training center, call 503-280-1440)
- Successful completion of EMTX12 (grade of “C” or better) is
required before registering for EMTX13.
Dates/Times*
- EMTX12- Offered Fall, Winter, and Summer terms. Fall- Monday and Wednesday
nights, 6p-9:20p; Winter- Monday and Wednesday days, 2p – 5:20p; and
Summer- accelerated program offered first 5 weeks of summer term, 7a–3:30p
- EMTX13- Offered Winter, Spring, and Summer terms. Winter- Monday and Wednesday
nights, 6p -9:20 p, Spring- Monday and Wednesday nights, 6p – 9:20p,
and Summer- accelerated program offered last 5 weeks of summer term, 7a-3:30p.
Estimated Costs*
- Tuition: Each course is a 5-credit class. Current in-state tuition rate
is $72.00 per credit hour, for a total tuition of $360 for each course. California,
Idaho, and Nevada State residents may attend Mt Hood Community College and
pay in-state tuition. Out-of-state tuition rate is $215 per credit hour. This
course is not financial aid eligible.
- Lab fee: $185 per term
- Books: Approximately $100
- Equipment: A watch with a second hand is required and a stethoscope is
suggested.
- Exam Fees: In order to take the national licensing exam, students will
be required to provide a passport-size photo and pay $70 in fees prior to
taking the final exam for EMTX13.
Immunizations
Students are required to verify current immunizations for Rubeola and Rubella.
Updated PPD and Hepatitis B immunizations are strongly recommended.
Registration
Registration dates and hours are available by calling the Admissions and Registration
office at 503-491-7392. Prospective students are advised this course is very
high in demand and the class size is limited to 30 students. Registration is
completed on a first-come, first-served basis.
