Why Service-Learning


For Students, Service-Learning:

  • increases self-efficacy, critical thinking skills, and the ability to work cooperatively
  • allows for exploration of career options and teaches important workplace skills
  • accommodates different learning styles
  • gives students the opportunity to learn from the community
  • provides a platform for analyzing and discussing community issues

  • makes coursework more relevant than traditional courses

For Community Partners, Service-Learning:

  • provides short-term volunteers to meet an organizations needs
  • provides potential long-term volunteers or new employee recruits
  • increases awareness of an organizations services and needs
  • heightens awareness of social issues
  • students develop a deeper appreciation of civic engagement
  • enhances an organizations relationship with the college
  • provides an organization with the opportunity to participate in the educational process
