Service-Learning Resources for Community Partners
Mt. Hood Community College partners with various non-profit agencies in our area to help provide student volunteers who are meeting real community needs through their service. Here are the benefits to becoming a service-learning partner:
- Service-learning provides short-term volunteers to meet an organization’s needs
- Service-learning provides potential long-term volunteers or new employee recruits
- Service-learning increases awareness of an organization’s services and needs
- Service-learning heightens awareness of social issues
- Service-learning students develop a deeper appreciation of civic engagement
- Service-learning enhances an organization’s relationship with the college
- Service learning provides an organization with the opportunity to participate in the educational process

Prospective Community Partners
To be considered a MHCC Service-Learning Community Partner, we have some criteria you must meet.
- Be a non-profit or public agency serving community needs.
- Be located in the MHCC district or have volunteer opportunities that are located within the MHCC district
- Provide volunteer positions that foster learning objectives.
- Incorporate risk-management procedures for injury prevention and liability reduction.
- Accept volunteers for one quarter (approximately 10 weeks). Some students will elect to extend their volunteer service beyond the quarter. We encourage this. (Note: Instructors assign varying minimum hours for the quarter, ranging from about 10 to 20 total hours)
- Have a responsible contact person who will:
- Respond quickly to student inquiries.
- Let students know quickly whether they are accepted.
- Place students in positions matching educational objectives.
- Ensure that students are oriented, trained, and supervised.
- Communicate with students, and/or MHCC instructors, and/or Eric Juenemann, Career & Experiential Learning Specialist about problems and successes.

- Interest in promoting students’ academic learning, volunteerism, and civic engagement.
If you would like to be added to the MHCC community partner site, please submit this interest form - Community Partner Profile Form. Your information will be reviewed and you will receive a follow-up call or email. If it’s determined that you meet the criteria for partnership, we’ll schedule a time to meet and do a site visit.
