Password Regulation
Mt. Hood Community College will use strong password protection for network login and computer access in all instances that username password combinations are used (PIN numbers are excluded from this regulation). These passwords are to be changed by the user of the passwords on a frequent basis (90 days or less for Computer Services staff or other sensitive areas and annually for all other users).
Strong passwords have the following characteristics:
- They are at least eight characters in length.
- They contain at least one alphabetic character.
- They contain at least one numeric character.
- They may contain at least one punctuation or symbol character (e.g. !$%^&*()_+|~-=\`{}[]:";'<>?,./ ) [Not the @ or # symbols]
- They are not trivially derived from the users network ID name, name, or a dictionary word.
Information service providers may set additional password requirements beyond those listed above for specific applications, systems, and services as appropriate.
