Textbook Selection and Course Content
Textbooks for each course will be selected by the instructor in accordance with division or department practices. Instructor(s) will consider in their selection, as much as possible, the cost of required texts. All requests will be processed through the area manager, who is also responsible for limiting the cost of textbooks. With the exception of workbooks, textbooks should be adopted for a minimum of two academic years. The College book store manager shall be given sufficient notification prior to any change or adoption to allow for implementation of the change. Part-time and temporary instructors will adhere to division and department practices. It is recommended that the reading level of suggested textbooks be assessed prior to adoption and correlated with course proficiency requirements. The Campus Book Store manager will not accept requests unless the area manager has approved them.
In cases where an MHCC instructor or staff member is an author of or holds any financial interest in the adoption of a textbook, the employee will play no role in the consideration or adoption process, and will inform their dean and department chair of the possibility of a conflict of interest. When necessary, other appropriate faculty will participate in the process to avoid a conflict of interest.
Complimentary texts for instructors are not furnished by the bookstore.
Instructors are given free choice in the teaching of their classes so long as it is relevant to the content of the course and the outcomes of the approved course outline. They are also free to select the books they will use, within the limits set by the division or department and bookstore. At the same time, they are responsible to defend and to justify their choice if challenged.
The College strongly recommends that instructors, in preparing their textbook orders and their library reading lists, clearly indicate what material is required and what is optional. Whenever possible, students should be given some choice where material is controversial or objectionable to some.
Individuals with a concern regarding a book or the content of a course should be referred to the office of the Vice President for Student Learning.
