Medical Customer Service Representative

If you say yes, then working in a medical office could be your career pathway.

This training provides the skills you need for an entry-level position and a great foundation to move your career in healthcare forward. When you complete this training, you will be ready for work and be able to continue your education to advance in your career.

Work-Based Classes for the Medical Office

If a student wants to complete the training in six months or two terms (fall and winter or winter and spring), it is a full-time training with classes during the day, in the evening, and on-line. In these classes, you will improve your skills, knowledge, and abilities for career entry-level positions working as a Medical Customer Service Representative.

Medical Terminology

You will learn medical terminology by body systems with related word elements, disease processes, diagnostic tests, and abbreviations.

Medical Office Procedures

You will learn procedures used in the medical office. Topics include: how medical office teams operate within various medical office settings; how rules of etiquette, standards from the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), and ethics are applied to office and telephone interaction; how computers and electronic medical records impact the medical office, how to use multiple telephone lines, and how to communicate appropriately and effectively in writing as well as on the telephone. You learn how to manage a medical office, organize and file patient records, and perform bookkeeping procedures.

Communication Technologies

You will master communication technologies and information management including Microsoft Office software such as Outlook. Students practice using e-mail, calendaring, and handling contacts. Students also improve their keyboarding speed and accuracy.

Your Career in a Medical Office

In a medical office, you would greet patients, schedule appointments, and prepare charts for office visits. You also perform the check-out process and collect co-payments. Furthermore, you will assist patients over the phone and complete patient enrollment forms using the computer system. Some medical customer service representatives work in medical call centers. You need the ability to multi-task while paying attention to details and the aptitude for working well in a fast-paced environment. Related job titles are medical receptionist, medical secretary, patient intake specialist, and patient services representative.
