Office Specialist Training

February 8-May 7, 2010

8 am-4 p.m.

A four-month credit-free full-time training held at MHCCs Maywood Campus, 10100 NE Prescott Street

  • Do you like to use computer software?
  • Do you like to interact with the public and with co-workers?
  • Are you able to multitask and move easily from one job duty to another?
  • Would you like to work in an office environment?

If you say yes, then becoming an office specialist may be in your career pathway. This training provides the skills you need for an entry-level office position. When you complete this training, you will be ready for work and for more education to advance in your career.

You perform a variety of clerical and administrative duties needed to run an office.

You perform and coordinate an office's clerical tasks. You make sure that correct information is given out to staff and clients. You can work in all types of firms and organizations.

You spend much of their day dealing with information. You answer the phone and give information to callers. You also transfer calls or take messages. You schedule meetings and appointments.

You organize and use paper and computer files. You produce letters and documents from files, inserting changes and corrections. You write notes from meetings and compose letters and memos. You compile data from various sources. To do these tasks, you store and retrieve data in computer and paper files. You may conduct research on the Internet and write reports. You may manage projects using database management software. You use a variety of office equipment. You use fax machines, copiers, and complex phone systems. You use computer software to run spreadsheets or do desktop publishing. You may support several members of the professional staff and often work as part of a team.

Classes:

  • Office Essentials with Keyboarding (GEN6YOB) Keyboarding, Windows, Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint
  • Office Essentials Plus (GEN6YOC) Proofreading (GEN6YOC)
  • Business Writing (GEN7GR) First Aid and CPR (Red Cross)
  • Job Readiness for Office Occupations: Customer Service, Phone Skills, Resum Development, Practice Interviews, and Job Search Assistance
  • Internship 100 hours (when classes are completed)

You will receive a Recognition of Merit Award and a class work portfolio.

Prerequisites:
High School Diploma or GED
College Placement Test at MHCCs Gresham Campus
Interviews with Steven Storla and Sheila McQueen
Typing Test (you must type 20 words per minute)
Computer Skills Assessment at WorkSource

You may be eligible for federal workforce funding to pay for this training. This training is not eligible for federal student financial aid.
